If you’ve ever had your thyroid checked, chances are your provider looked at your TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone)and said everything looks “normal.” But here’s the thing—TSH alone doesn’t give a full picture of your thyroid health and you will benefit from comprehensive thyroid testing.
At The Holistic Approach for Women, we believe in going deeper. Many women come to us with symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, or hair loss—only to be told their thyroid labs are fine. But often, they haven’t had comprehensive thyroid testing, which includes much more than just TSH.
What Is TSH, and Why Isn’t It Enough?
TSH is a hormone produced by your brain to signal the thyroid to produce more hormone. It’s a helpful marker, but it doesn’t measure the actual thyroid hormones in your body, like Free T3 and Free T4, which directly affect how you feel.
Think of TSH like a thermostat. It sends a signal, but it doesn’t tell us how warm or cold it actually feels. For that, we need to check the actual temperature—or in this case, your real hormone levels.
What’s Included in a Comprehensive Thyroid Panel?
The thyroid gland influences your overall health! A full thyroid panel gives us a better view of how your thyroid is functioning and whether you may have hypothyroidism or an autoimmune thyroid condition like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Here’s what we typically include:
- TSH
- Free T4 – A storage form of thyroid hormone
- Free T3 – The active hormone your cells use for metabolism and energy
- Reverse T3 – An inactive form that can block healthy thyroid function
- Thyroid antibodies (TPOAb and TgAb) – To screen for autoimmune thyroid disease
Why Thyroid Health Matters for You
Many women have normal TSH but imbalanced thyroid hormone levels, and their symptoms are often dismissed. Here’s what we frequently see:
- Low Free T3 even when TSH and Free T4 look normal
- Elevated reverse T3, which can block active thyroid hormone
- Positive thyroid antibodies, signaling Hashimoto’s thyroiditis—often years before TSH becomes abnormal
Don’t Settle for “Normal” When You Still Feel Off
Your symptoms are real. If you’re tired of being told your labs are fine, but you still feel exhausted or unwell, it’s time to consider thyroid function testing that looks at the full picture. This includes checking thyroid hormone levels, how well your body is converting hormones, and whether your immune system is affecting your thyroid.
At The Holistic Approach for Women, we specialize in identifying the root causes of thyroid imbalances. We use both conventional and functional testing to ensure nothing is overlooked with our 5 step process.
“Relying on TSH alone can miss deeper thyroid imbalances that impact a woman’s energy, mood, weight, and overall well-being,” says Ena Cardona-Mason, FNP-BC. “A full thyroid panel helps us uncover issues like poor hormone conversion or autoimmune thyroid disease—so we can help women feel like themselves again.”
